The cake....update

For all of you that have emailed me about the cake...here is the update.

They were actually very apologetic when Joe took the cake in. They don't issue refunds, but they did give us a store credit of $90.00. The nice thing about the credit is that the bakery is right next door to the bookstore I use to purchase a lot of the books for my business, and Joe usually picks up books for me once a week on his way home from work. Now he will be able to go in and get fresh bread for dinner or dessert anytime we want it. I'm sure they would like us to spend a lot of it at one time, but I plan on spreading the love a long way. It will be nice to have homemade bread each week or some eclairs for dessert when we feel like it. I definitely won't be using it on a big ticket item like a $90.00 cake! So, even though we don't shop there on a regular basis, the free bread will be nice. They do make a yummy Moravian tea cake, so we might splurge on that in the fall. I'm still not up to drinking coffee yet, but hopefully when the cold weather arrives, I'll be able to have a cup every now and then and some tea cake to go with it would make for a lovely fall morning breakfast! So, if you're in town, come see us, we'll have fresh baked goods for the next few months!

I have been helping out at the church this week to get everything ready for the elementary school camp. It started today and everything went fabulous! It was so well-planned and everything was done with excellence. How many churches have too many volunteers? We actually had too many people. I was on the hospitality committee and we signed the kids in and out and did snack and any other odd jobs. There were times we were looking for work to do. That is a fantastic problem to have. The kids had a blast and can't wait until tomorrow. Go Jesus!

Emma starts dance again today. She has already asked if she can skip the first day and go next week. I said to her, "No Emma today is the first day, we have to go. It will be so much fun to see all of your friends that you haven't seen since June." My smart six year old chimes in from the backseat, "But Mom, whatever day Emma goes, will be HER first day. She could go next Wednesday and it would still be HER first day!" She can reason her way through anything! Miss Smartie Pants! I am going to miss our car rides together when the girls go back to school. It seems that we have engaged in so many fun conversations this summer while driving here and there. I guess it's because once we're home I usually have business to attend to for a little while, while they like to get on their computer, watch tv or play outside while I work. At least when school starts back, Ill hopefully get my work done while they are away and we can get back to our school routine. I actually like our afternoons when Hannah is in school. I think we appreciate having her home so much that our afternoon and evening time really centers around the girls and their days. We do homework, have snack together, play outside, read books together, etc. and there isn't as much tv or computer time as they get in the summer. They are forced to be with the family more! We have all enjoyed our lazy summer, but I am ready for more structure and routine in our days!

Well, back to Emma wanting to skip her very first day of dance for the year......my girls are so much like me. I love being involved in things but when the time comes to actually leave my comfortable home and go do the thing, I usually have a tug in my heart to stay home. I absolutely loved volunteering at church this week preparing for camp and it was very rewarding spending time with the other women that were there working, but when the hour came to actually leave and go part of me regretted volunteering. Isn't it great though when we do something for the Lord and we actually get up and go do the thing and it is more rewarding than we imagined? He blesses us for our commitment to serve and I am usually so glad that I signed up for whatever it is that I did. Hopefully Emma will experience a great first day back at dance and it will set the stage for a great year. I must admit that each year when we buy their new shoes I usually splurge and get them each a new leotard even though we have a basketful they could start the year with. I think having new tights, leotard and shoes helps motivate them on the first day. I can bribe them with how much fun it will be to wear their new clothes and go back to see their friends. I remember those days. What kid doesn't like new clothes on the first day of school? The new backpack filled with all the crisp new folders and papers, sharp yellow pencils with perfect erasers and a brand new box of pointed crayons. I know I am a Type A personality, but new office supplies still excite me! I love Staples! Having new clothes and a backpack filled with new, organized school supplies was always the highlight of every new school year for me.

So, next week will be our last day of vacation and as sad I will be to have Hannah leave us all day again, I am looking forward to fall and cooler weather and pumpkins and apples. If you have a favorite back to school memory, share it in the comment section. We love hearing from you and everyone seems too afraid to leave a comment on the blog! Comments are completely safe and only readers of the blog can read them. I have the blog set so that other bloggers can't scroll through the list of blogger websites and find ours, etc. So, share your favorite school memory if you have one...we'd love to hear it!

I'll try to post a picture of Emma later in her new leotard and shoes! She's such a cutie!

Hi to my sweet daughter, I love your blogs--I fill with joy when I read what a Godly woman you have become.

I have two memories of school--one when I was a child and the second when you and Catherine were little and in school.

My own experience about school is that I clearly remember riding bus #4. It would pick us up early in the morning. Aunt Bobbie and I would stand in the kitchen and watch the bus come through the trees at the barn. It gave us just enough time to pick up our books and get to the end of the driveway where it picked us up.

We arrived home around four in the afternoon. Granny Norman always had dinner ready for us.

In those days not "everybody" had a car so we didn't know that we were underprivileged by having to ride a bus. It was always a good time to socialize--I always had an eye on some boy on the bus who didn't know I existed! But the thrill was just seeing him!

My second memory about school is so vivid concerning you and your sister. It was always this time of year that I dreaded school starting for each of us. I always enjoyed having you girls home during the summer and it was sad to have to give you up to the public schools. My favorite comment to you and Catherine was that I was going to hide you in the coat closet where no one would find you. I wanted to keep you home. I would tell you and your sister that I would slide your food under the door so you could eat. (I don't think any of us realized or voiced that a tray wouldn't fix under the narrow opening under the door.) I'm certain if Hannah had been around at that time she would have gently corrected Memhaw!!

I, too, enjoyed every summer, in fact, I enjoyed every day that you and Catherine were children at home. I cherished every day and didn't take one for granted. You two girls were precious children and a pure joy to "mother."

I love you. MOM

Ha Ha! I love the school bus story, Mom. Eyeing boys on the bus is hysterical! I too remember you trying to "persuade" us to hide out at home and not go back to school. I remember thinking it wouldn't be that bad hiding in the coat closet instead of going back to school! (Although I would have missed my backpack with new school supplies:) Hannah has already shed a few tears about returning to school. I know she loves school and once it starts she will be fine. I want her to LOVE school like I did, but it does warm my heart that she loves me so much!

awh what great memories!

i always looked forward to getting to my classroom, once i had been inschool at least a year or two and had already made friends, and seeing who was in my class! i looked forward to that all summer and couldnt wait.

but my favorite favorite FAVORITE memory is of 3rd and 4th grade when i took the bus. and my 2 very best friends and i would sit together on the bus and when it would get to our stop and we would rush off the bus and run as fast as we could to our homes to drop off our books so we could go out in the yard and play. i can still see the view out of the window from the seat i sat in, and that final little hill the bus would drive down right before our stop, i would get soooo excited that i was home and could play!!! :]

ooooh and Happy Birthday, Hannah!!!!!!!

ONE more memory, i promise!

I absolutely enjoyed Hannah's birthday party because I vividly remember my 6th birthday. I got the coolest presents and that was such a great year for me. I've always had fond memories of being 6. And I hope the same goes for Hannah. Being 6 is such a fun age! :]

I have another bus memory to add to your Memaws. Aunt Tricia and I would sometimes stand out near the road and wait for the bus. Granny Norman would make us egg biscuits and juice and we would eat outside waiting on the bus. When we saw the bus coming we would put our cups and plates and napkins in our huge mailbox for Granny Norman to get later.

Another favorite memory of the first grade is this...my class had a picnic at High Point City Lake Park. My mother (Granny) was a grade mother and she brought cupcakes or something and helped champerone kids. When the picnic was over, I got to ride with her rather than go back to the school amd catch the bus. I remember that she took me to her office and I sat in the lobby. She gave me a paper and pencil. It seems like there was a weird ashtray in the lobby that was made to look like a golf course. Sounds boring I guess...but I thought it was so great to get to be with my mother at her work and ride in the car with her when I was officially supposed to be at school.

Aunt Carol,
I love the egg biscuit story..putting the plates and things in the mailbox for Granny Norman. What a sweet ritual and memory.
I love that Granny came to your picnic. How much fun to have the priviledge of returning to work with her instead of going back to school. How funny that you remember the goofy ashtray. What a great memory! Thanks for sharing!
