Halloween 2010

It is an annual tradition that all the children on our street, meet outside on Halloween night and trick or treat together.  It is fun to watch as they run from house to house trick-or-treating.   After we trick-or-treat in our neighborhood we go to the church Fall Festival and enjoy some time playing games and eating hotdogs.  This year we also trick-or-treated in a big neighborhood that is known for the best trick-or-treating around.  Nearly every house sits outside and gives out candy and they have nice sidewalks to walk on and it is well-lite and safe.  The kids had a lot of fun trick-or-treating with our friends this year.

The girls costumes were ordered 2.5 weeks before Halloween and still didn’t arrive on time, even after paying for Express shipping to make sure they were here on time! So, the day before Halloween they reluctantly went to the Halloween   store and picked new costumes. They were really disappointed. Especially, sweet Emma because she had her hopes set on being Sharpe from High School Musical and we had the perfect wig, shoes and accessories to go with her costume.  She ended up picking Gabriella from High School Musical because they were out of the Sharpe Costume she wanted.  Hannah had planned on being Daphne from Scooby Doo but had to go with a pirate costume.  She ended up liking her pirate costume a lot, but Emma told me last night (January 14th) “Mom, on Halloween lots of people told Hannah she looked pretty but no one told me that. “  Of course lots of us told her how awesome she looked, but when we went out to the other neighborhood, some strangers commented on Hannah’s costume and not Emma’s.  She brought that up out of the blue going to bed last night, so she still remembers being disappointed on Halloween.

That makes me sad!  She has such a tender heart and always wants to be recognized too.  It is hard raising two girls so close in age.  They want everything to always be fair, equal and even.  We try to encourage each of them and remark about their special qualities and why each of them is different and special.  I just pray that God makes up for where we fail.  They are both so unique and so special.  Yesterday Hannah was so sweet to Emma.  Hannah was going to a friend’s “spa” birthday party and Emma was staying home.  Hannah wrote a note for Emma to open while she was at the party.  It read, “Emma I will really miss you.  I will tell you all about it when I get home and then I will play with you.”  Love Hannah.  Sure enough, when Hannah got home she treated Emma to a special “spa” experience just like she had at the party.  She made a sugar scrub and massaged mine and Emma’s legs and feet. She made a oatmeal, yogurt facial for us to try and she gave us backrubs. She didn’t want Emma to feel left out.   They are precious to one another (most of the time!).

This is the only picture where Carter was sitting still on the couch and he is hidden in his big Elmo head, Emma is stunned, Harper is giving a funny face and Hannah’s eyes were closed!  Oh, well there’s always next year!  Carter was a turkey about getting his picture made this entire night.  He wouldn’t participate and he seldom had the Elmo head on top of his head.  Bad costume choice for a 22 month old, but Elmo is the only character he really knows and loves.  So, big Elmo head was the choice we went with!

I snuck Carter into this shot because he was looking when no one else was and I wanted at least shot of him wearing the Elmo head!
